Description

“In the moonlight” shows a girl's profile dissolving into a night garden of roses. The whole picture is built on the contrast between pale beads and an almost black ground, which is why it seems to be lit by real moonlight.

What the picture shows

In the upper left is the silhouette of a woman's head in profile with a tall, wavy hairstyle: the strands are laid out in even lines of pearl-white beads, while the face stays dark and is only outlined. The lower half of the canvas is filled with large open roses stitched as outlines — silver, white and cool greyish-blue spirals of petals against deep brown. Fine golden-copper and white sparks are scattered between the flowers and through the hair, drifting upward like pollen. The palette is restrained: only eight bead colours, but the piece lives on contrast — a pale graphic drawing on a dense dark ground. The background and the faint shadow roses at the bottom stay as print, with beadwork following only the outlines and the shimmering details.
