Description

“Still life with quince” shows a summer bouquet on a table beside an open window, with the sun setting over the water outside. The mood is warm and unhurried — the hour when the day is over but the evening has not quite begun.

What the picture shows

At the centre stands a generous bouquet in a white vase: crimson zinnias and dahlias, sunflower-yellow gerberas, white and cream daisies, small pink chrysanthemums. Beside it, on a table covered with a softly folded white cloth, lie velvety quinces with dark green leaves. Through the window you can see a pink and orange sky, a dark mountain shore and a path of sunlight on the water; a deep green curtain hangs on the left and a light lace drape falls on the right. The beadwork goes into the flowers, the vase, the fruit and the brightest glints on the water — these are what hold your eye. The landscape beyond the window, the curtain and the tablecloth stay largely as print on the canvas, so the bouquet steps forward and glows against a quieter background.
