Description

“Bast in the night” shows a cat sitting in profile against a large pale disc. The figure is dark and ornamental, and the silhouette reads at once, like an Egyptian statuette.

What the picture shows

The canvas is tall. The cat sits upright, head raised, its tail curling into a spiral around the paws. The whole body is covered in pattern: black and graphite beads form the base, and over them run copper, terracotta and silver curls, spirals, drops and small arcs that pick out the chest, the shoulder, the haunch and the tail. Behind the head is a wide beaded burst — a pale fan-shaped disc in white and pearl beads, part sun, part flower. The background is grey with a soft gradient from near-white at the centre to dark in the corners, and it stays as print on the canvas, so the cat stands out from it as a crisp shadow.
