Description

“Lace tie” is a large heart woven from white beaded lace on a warm ochre ground. The pattern is symmetrical, close to an embroidered doily.

What the picture shows

The square canvas is given over entirely to one shape. The heart is built from concentric rows: a red stone at the centre set in fine white beads, then petals and arches worked in pearl and cream beads with gold inserts. Small red triangles and round stones are scattered between the rows, keeping the rhythm across the whole field. The outline is edged with black toothed lace, and pearls on short stems are set around the outer border like a fringe. The background is a textured ochre-orange surface that stays as print, which is exactly why the white lace reads so sharply on it.
