Description

“Gold of the night” shows a woman from behind against a dark ground, dressed in dense golden ornament. The bird on her hand and her lowered head keep the scene quiet and inward.

What the picture shows

The format is tall and narrow. The woman stands with her back to us, her face seen in profile, and her hair carries a full headdress of golden leaves worked in long stitches. A small bird sits on her raised hand. The bodice is covered in an unbroken beaded pattern: symmetrical curls, heart-shaped loops and spirals in gold, copper, amber and terracotta. Lower down the skirt turns into a finer relief pattern with reddish and near-black accents. The background is dark — deep green-grey and black with gold streaks at the top — and it stays as print on the canvas. That contrast is exactly why the beaded dress glows like metal.
