Description

“Day flicker” shows a woman from behind in a dress woven entirely out of ornament, with a small turquoise bird on her hand. The mood is warm and golden.

What the picture shows

The canvas is tall and narrow. The woman stands half-turned, her face visible only in profile as she leans towards the bird perched on her fingers — the single cool turquoise note on an otherwise golden picture. Her hair is stitched as large leaf-shaped strands in copper, cream and dark brown beads. The bare back and shoulders stay as print on the canvas, while the bodice and sleeve are covered edge to edge in beaded curls: spirals, heart-shaped loops, fine dots. The skirt is darker, with near-black and ash accents. The background is a textured gold-ochre wall with streaks, also printed, so all the beadwork concentrates on the figure and reads as relief.
