Description

“Secrets of the ocean” is a marine sampler in which dozens of small motifs and hand-lettered words add up to one large map of the underwater world. The mood is adventurous, like an old traveller’s scrapbook.

What the picture shows

The canvas is vertical and densely filled. A sun-compass with rays and a wind rose sits at the top, and below it the words Oceanarium, Fish, Compass, Mermaids, Anchors and Lighthouses ride the waves. Between them are a pirate ship with black sails and a black flag, a blue octopus with curling arms, a red-and-white striped lighthouse, a mermaid with long auburn hair, a seahorse, shells, starfish and keys. The palette is mostly blue and off-white with touches of terracotta and turquoise. Beads cover the figures and the letters, while the white background with its fine watercolour drawing stays as print, so the composition still reads clearly despite all the detail.
