Description

“Leader” is a front-facing wolf portrait built from gold, cream and white beads. The gaze is calm and direct, and a crown of rays opens behind the head as if the animal were standing against a low sun.

What the picture shows

The wolf’s face fills almost the whole square canvas. The fur is not a plain mass: ornamental curls, spirals and long arcs run through it, closer to carving than to animal hair. Pale pearl beads follow the edges of each strand, warm gold and bronze fill the cheeks, the forehead and the heavy mane, and a symmetrical pattern forms across the muzzle. The eyes are blue with dark rims, the nose black and smooth. The fine rays around the head and the star below the chest are stitched in long rows of small beads, so the area around the face glows. The sand-beige background stays as print on the canvas — beadwork covers the wolf and the rays, which pushes the figure forward.
