Description

“Spring is coming - spring is the way!” is a naive, almost childlike scene: a red boat with a small figure floats on water made of hundreds of coloured circles.

What the picture shows

The entire surface of the canvas is laid out in round flower rosettes — white, pink, turquoise, yellow, blue, green — each with a different centre and a different rim. They make up both the water below and the green shore above. In the middle floats a large boat in deep red with the dark silhouette of a person standing in it, and beside it a full green bush worked in small beads set in columns. Along the green band at the top smaller circles are scattered like the first flowers on a slope. Beadwork covers almost the entire surface here, and five colours of microbeads supply the flower centres and the smallest details that would otherwise blur into a single patch. The circles vary in diameter, from large ones on the water to very small ones near the top, and it is this shift in scale that creates the sense of depth.
