Description

“White” is the head of a white elephant seen face on, covered in fine ornament, with a turquoise lotus flower at the tip of its trunk.

What the picture shows

The elephant looks straight at the viewer, ears spread wide, trunk lowered and curled at the end. The whole figure is pearl white, and over it runs a small pattern of scrolls, hearts and teardrops across the forehead, the ears and the trunk. The ears are lit with golden copper along their edges, and rays spread out behind the head as though the sun were rising directly from the animal's back. The background is dark brown-grey with raised lines that are also beaded and radiate from the centre. At the bottom the trunk almost touches the turquoise lotus, the only bright note in the whole picture. Six colours of microbeads go into the finest lines of the ornament and the transitions inside the ears. The composition is strictly symmetrical, with the axis running through the trunk, the forehead and the centre of the rays, which makes the piece calm and almost ornamental. The beaded background is the reason the bead count is so high here, over seventeen thousand.
