Description

“Cranes” is a panoramic night scene: a flock of birds in orange and gold flying across a dark sky past a large pale moon.

What the picture shows

The canvas is stretched very wide. At the centre sits the large disc of the moon, matte and cream-white with faint markings. Dozens of crane silhouettes fan out to left and right of it, some deep orange, others golden ochre, all reduced to a few lines in the manner of eastern graphics. At the upper right the sky fills with white spiral waves worked in small beads, reading now as wind, now as cloud. The background is dark, from black to deep grey, with a scattering of fine dots. The birds, the moon and the waves are beaded while the background stays as print on the canvas, so the silhouettes come out very sharp. There are only twelve bead colours here, and the piece lives on contrast. The birds are laid out in two streams that flow around the moon from the left and the right, so a static composition gains the feeling of a flock in motion. The canvas is more than twice as long as it is tall.
