Description

“Blue balls” is a pale still life: a bouquet of round blue flower heads in a clear glass vase on a table.

What the picture shows

The blooms are gathered into dense spherical heads made of tiny petals, shading from saturated blue through pale lilac to almost white. The stems with their narrow cut leaves show through the glass of the vase, and the vase itself, with its faceted foot, is worked in pale and transparent beads, so it genuinely reads as glass. One flower head lies on the table at the lower left beside a green sprig and balances the composition. The background is an even grey-white and the tabletop is warm ochre with a faintly suggested pattern; both stay as print on the canvas, so all the shine falls on the flowers, the leaves and the glass. The heads in the bouquet differ in size and turn in different directions, so the arrangement never looks symmetrical. Nineteen bead colours go mostly into the gradations inside the blooms, from the blue core out to the pale edge of the petals.
