Description

“Playful wind” is a portrait of a girl whose hair the wind has thrown in every direction in rainbow strands.

What the picture shows

The face is shown in profile against a warm peach background: the cheekbone, lips, chin and ear are visible, while the eyes are completely hidden under the hair. The strands themselves are the real subject — red, orange, yellow, green, turquoise, blue and violet ribbons fly upward and to the left, coiling into spirals at the tips, with a few fine wisps trailing down. The neck and shoulder are painted in soft ochre and pale blue and stay as print, so the skin contrasts with the shine of the hair. Each strand is beaded separately, with the stitches running along the curls, so the surface has relief and catches the light differently depending on where you stand. The format is square and the figure is fitted into it almost edge to edge: the hair touches all four sides and only the lower right corner stays open. That makes the portrait feel dense and decorative at once, closer to a poster than to a classical portrait.
