Description

“Dreaming” shows a girl in profile holding her palms out in front of her and watching paper butterflies rise from her hands.

What the picture shows

Her hair is gathered into an elaborate arrangement of fine braids coiled at the back of the head, worked in golden and pearl beads so that every braid runs in its own direction. Her clothing suggests a kimono: the wide sleeve and shoulder are covered with a dense floral pattern in terracotta, green, lilac and blue. The butterflies are folded from paper, origami-style: two blue ones below, a white one near her palms, and several smaller ones above among lilac sprigs on the pale background. The face and hands stay as print on the canvas, so the features keep their watercolour softness while the beadwork takes on the hair, the fabric and the butterflies. The background is light grey with warm washes and almost no stitching. The colours are warm and hushed — sand, terracotta, lilac and grey-blue — and the only cool note is the pair of blue butterflies near her palms. The whole story hangs on them.
