Description

“In grass” shows a fox lying in tall meadow grass and watching a butterfly that hovers right in front of it.

What the picture shows

The animal takes up the right half of the canvas: the russet head with its white muzzle and black-tipped ears is turned upward, the gaze fixed on an orange-and-black butterfly at the left. Around it grow dense grasses and flowers — purple asters with yellow centres, small blue forget-me-nots, white and yellow meadow blooms, thin stems and seed heads. The background is light green, with soft light filtering through leaves. Beadwork covers the fox, the butterfly, the flowers and the grass of the foreground, while the blurred green light in the depth stays as print on the canvas, so air opens up between the dense stitching and the background and the scene never feels crowded despite twenty-nine bead colours. The butterfly and the fox share one line of sight, so the composition leads the eye from left to right at once. The flowers in the foreground are deliberately larger than those further back, which makes it feel as if you were watching the scene lying in the grass yourself.
