Description

“Shining blue” is a winter evening in an old town: a lamp on the embankment, snow in the air and warm lights in the windows across the river.

What the picture shows

The whole picture is built on blue, from near black in the branches to pale sky blue overhead. A cast-iron lamp with a faceted lantern stands in the middle, throwing out a yellow glow and thin rays. To either side are houses with steep roofs, a sharp church spire and a clock tower, all under snow, with rows of warm windows. Along the bottom runs a wrought-iron railing with a diamond pattern, and behind it the water carries long reflections of the lights. Bare branches heavy with frost cross the top of the composition. Beadwork covers the snow, the lights, the frost, the railing and the glints on the water, while the blue sky stays as print — which is why the light really does read as light. There are only fourteen bead colours here and nearly all of them are blue or white, which is exactly why the yellow lamp and window lights read so brightly.
