Description

“On the wings of the night” is an owl flying over a winter village — and that same village is hidden inside its wings and body: little houses, snowy trees and roads.

What the picture shows

The bird spreads its wings right across the canvas, and the head, with large yellow eyes and soft lilac plumage, is turned towards the viewer. Inside the silhouette a winter landscape appears: blue and red roofs under snow, frosted trees, narrow streets, and on the lower wing a row of lit windows. The tail breaks into bands of warm ochre and blue feathers that look like fringe. The background is a deep night sky running from turquoise to dark blue, with small stars and a thin crescent moon at the upper right. Beadwork covers the owl together with the whole landscape inside it, while the sky stays mostly as print on the canvas, so the silhouette reads instantly, even from across a room. Hiding a landscape inside the silhouette gives the picture two readings: first you see the bird, and only then the little town inside its wings.
