Description

“Minor mood” shows a couple walking away down an autumn avenue with a dog beside them: a quiet, slightly wistful scene after rain.

What the picture shows

A man in a burgundy jacket has his arm around a woman in a white hat as they move off along the path into the park. A red-and-white dog with floppy ears trots to the right, and a long shadow stretches away from the figures. The trees on both sides are nearly bare, but the crowns still hold gold, russet and green leaves, and the same leaves cover the ground. The path is wet: the puddles in the foreground reflect the figures and red patches of foliage, while further in the avenue lightens and dissolves into haze. Beadwork covers the leaves, the figures, the dog and the reflections in the puddles, while the blurred depth of the avenue stays as print on the canvas, which is exactly why the distance still reads as air. The palette is autumnal and muted — ochre, russet, olive and greyish white — and the only saturated note is the man's burgundy jacket, which the eye keeps returning to.
