Description

“Mermaid” is a sea beauty with golden hair who has risen out of a turquoise wave and looks straight at the viewer while a sailing ship passes behind her.

What the picture shows

Her face is painted softly, almost in watercolour, and is left as print — the beadwork begins where the hair does. Golden strands with a pearl diadem and a string of beads frame the face, and she rests her cheek on one hand. On the right, at the horizon, a three-masted ship sails with all canvas set, gulls above it. Below is turquoise water with white foam, dark green leaves, white blossoms and a small striped fish. The sky is pale, blue shading into pink. Beadwork covers the hair, the jewellery, the water, the foam and the sails, while the face and hand stay as print, so the features keep their softness while everything around them shimmers. The decorative stones and pearls go into the diadem and the spray. The palette splits in two: warm gold in the hair and jewellery above, cool turquoise sea below. The canvas is small, so the beadwork concentrates on a few main areas instead of spreading thin.
