Description

“Beauty of autumn” is an old European town on the water at the height of golden autumn: a stone bridge, tiled roofs and trees burning red.

What the picture shows

A two-arched bridge spans the whole foreground, with the dark silhouettes of passers-by along its railing. Behind it rise houses with steep roofs, turrets and dormer windows in terracotta and ochre. On both sides the crowns of the trees, in red, orange and yellow, almost meet above the water. Down in the canal a boat holds two small figures, ducks swim beside it, and the surface carries a blurred reflection of trees and arches. The sky between the branches is blue with white clouds. Beadwork covers the foliage, the roofs, the stonework of the bridge and the glints on the water, while the deep shadow under the arches stays as print on the canvas, so the stitching never flattens the perspective and the distance keeps its air. The autumn palette carries the picture: red, orange, ochre and terracotta hold almost the whole canvas, and cool blue appears only in the sky and the water.
