Description

“Lavender Chantilly” is a Provence still life that gathers three lavender motifs at once: a bouquet in a terracotta pot, a smaller lavender bush beside it, and a generous wreath of lilac and pink blooms on the wall. The background is cracked ivory plaster with antique handwriting and the words Eau de Lavande — the vintage French mood that makes shabby chic so recognisable.

What the picture shows

The whole composition runs on shades of purple, from deep ink to pale lilac and near white. Lavender spikes are stitched with a stem stitch, and beads are sewn on following the natural shape of the inflorescences. It is this technique that creates a delicate 3D effect, making the lavender look "fluffy" and alive. The terracotta pots and the stone shelf stay as print on the canvas — beadwork covers only the flowers, which is exactly why they glow against the matte background.
