Description

“Whirl away...” is a horse's head in profile with a mane that flies apart in long coloured ribbons, as if the animal had just broken into a gallop.

What the picture shows

The muzzle is painted in warm tones — chestnut and ochre, with pink around the nostrils and a pale blaze down the nose — and the eye is dark and alert. The mane and forelock are broken into separate strands: blue, turquoise, red, yellow, purple and white bands stretch to the right across the whole canvas and coil at the tips, while a few strands fall away as thin threads. The background is light, with faint warm washes, so the coloured ribbons read clearly instead of getting lost. Beadwork covers the muzzle and every strand of the mane; the stitches follow the direction of movement, so the surface has real relief and shimmers when you look at it from the side. The pale background stays as print on the canvas. The whole design rests on movement: every line runs the same way, so it feels as if the horse has just burst out of the frame and the mane has not caught up yet.
