Description

“Cocktail-party” is a cheerful bar sign: the words Welcome to Group Therapy are scattered in big beaded letters above a row of cocktails, and the whole picture rests on that joke.

What the picture shows

The background is a watercolour wash of turquoise, grass green and blue, like spilled paint. Six drinks line up across it: a tall mojito with a cherry, a pink martini with a slice of lime, a hurricane glass holding a layered blue-and-orange cocktail under a striped umbrella, a glass of cola with ice and a straw, another tall glass with lime, and a red martini with a straw. The lettering is hand-drawn, tilted and uneven in size, the way bar boards are written in chalk. Beadwork covers the lettering, the glasses, the ice and the fruit, which is why the picture glitters like real glass under bar lights. The watercolour background stays as print on the canvas, so the colour patches never compete with the stitching. The layout is clearly tiered: lettering on top, a row of glasses below, and a little free background left between them.
