Description

“Picturesque peonies” shows a bouquet in a blue vase painted in broad strokes, like an oil sketch. There are not many colours, but they are rich.

What the picture shows

The bouquet holds several large blooms: a white and cream peony in the centre, deep red and raspberry buds to the left and above, an orange flower to the side, and a lilac-and-white fan of petals on the right. The leaves are worked in dark green beads with short strokes, so they read like brushwork. The vase is round, blue and sky blue with pink reflections, and beside it on the table lie two cherries on a stem and a pale thread of beads. The background of pink, ochre and mint strokes stays as print, which sets the beaded flowers clearly apart from the painterly ground. The background strokes run at an angle, from pink on the left to mint on the right, and they are what gives the whole piece its movement. Eleven colours are enough here because the flowers are worked in large patches without fine gradations. The petals are laid in short rows following the direction of the brushstroke, so the flowers keep a painterly, slightly loose outline.
