Description

“Pegasus” is a decorative horse whose mane curls into one large spiral filling the whole square of the canvas. The picture is built not on colour but on the play of pearl and gold.

What the picture shows

The horse's head is turned in profile, and the neck and mane flow into a broad wave laid in long rows of white, cream, pearl, gold and bronze beads. Inside the wave, curls twist like feathers or like a breaking sea. Lower down, in the left corner, a second, smaller horse appears — the same ornamental silhouette in miniature. The brown background with its smoky circles stays as print; beadwork goes only onto the horses and the curved lines that radiate from them. Because the shades sit so close together, the picture reads as relief rather than as drawing. The spiral unwinds from the head downward and to the left, so the eye circles the square and comes back to the profile. The horse's eye is marked with a single dark bead, almost the only dark spot on the pale figure.
