Description

“After the premiere” shows a ballerina sitting on stage with a bouquet in her lap while the legs of other dancers in pointe shoes appear behind her. The moment when the flowers have been handed over and the performance has just ended.

What the picture shows

She wears a dark bodice embroidered in gold, silver and pearl beads and a white tutu; her hair is pinned up and a pearl tiara shines in it. In her hands she holds a bouquet of small yellow, white and blue flowers. Several more colourful bouquets lie on the floor around her — red, lilac and orange patches worked in mixed beads. The background is pale and almost bleached out: the figures of the other ballerinas in their tutus stay as print on the canvas, while beadwork takes the bodice, the flowers and the floor, so the centre of the composition glows brightest. The figure sits on a diagonal, back to the viewer and face lowered, and that pose gives the scene the quiet that follows applause. The pointe shoes of the dancers behind are only lightly drawn, so they do not compete with the figure in front.
