Description

“Baby elephant with balloons” shows a graphic grey elephant holding a bunch of balloons against a chalkboard background. A minimal subject in grey and yellow.

What the picture shows

The elephant is drawn as an outline and filled with a net pattern in grey beads: fine crossing lines run over the body, the ear is yellow with a zigzag, and the eye is a single black dot. Thin white strings rise from the trunk holding seven balloons in yellow, mustard, white and grey, one of them also worked as a net. The dark grey background with its chalkboard texture and faint pale streaks stays as print, so the beadwork reads like a chalk drawing. The palette is restrained — just ten colours — and the piece lives on outline and texture rather than colour. The balloon strings are long and fine; they run across almost the whole upper half of the canvas and hold the composition together. The balloons differ in size and height, so the bunch looks alive rather than lined up in a row.
