Description

“Affectionate date” shows a bouquet of garden flowers in a round glass vase on a wooden table. A calm still life against a cool blue background.

What the picture shows

The bouquet gathers several different flowers: a tall white and cream foxglove on the left, a blue iris with yellow falls, a pink and lilac hydrangea, a deep red rose in the centre and pale pink peonies beside it. Stems and leaves are worked in several shades of green, and inside the vase they refract through clear glass rendered in transparent and silvery beads. A butterfly with amber wings sits on a branch to the left, a cluster of red berries lies below, and a second, darker butterfly appears on the right. The blue sky and distant mountains stay as print, while beadwork holds the flowers, the vase and the small details in the foreground. The bouquet is arranged asymmetrically: the tall foxglove pulls the composition up on the left, and the hydrangea balances it on the right. Twenty-five colours give every flower its own range, from cool blue to warm cherry. The tabletop is warm, close to brick in tone.
