Description

“Bamboo bear” shows a panda among bamboo stems, stitched in the manner of a loose watercolour stroke. The animal chews a leaf calmly and looks straight at the viewer.

What the picture shows

The panda holds the centre of the composition: a white muzzle with black patches around the eyes, black ears and paws, a silver-grey shoulder. Blue and turquoise highlights are scattered across the head, the nose is pink, and a green leaf is held in the teeth. Bamboo branches with narrow leaves grow all around — vivid green, dark emerald, in places almost blue. The background is white and grey with splashes and runs of paint, and red and orange marks show through among them. The washes stay as print while beadwork builds the bear and the leaves, so the panda steps clearly forward. The panda looks straight at the viewer, and the eyes are the centre of the work. The twenty colours are spread unevenly: most go into the greenery and the grey-blue shades of the fur, while black and white hold the contrast. The bamboo stems cross the canvas vertically and partly screen the bear.
