Description

“New year's night” shows a family of snowmen on a snowy hill under a starry sky. The subject is kind and childlike, with the feeling of a quiet holiday.

What the picture shows

A large snowman stands in the middle in a striped bobble hat and a long knitted scarf in green, red and white. Two small snowmen wear matching scarves beside him, a white rabbit with a candy cane sits on the right, and a grey-blue bird has perched on the big snowman's shoulder. To the left grows a fir tree hung with golden stars instead of baubles, and a comet flies above it, trailing more stars. A gift wrapped in green paper with a red ribbon lies at the bottom. The sky is deep blue with turquoise washes and the snow is white with pale blue shadows; beadwork takes the figures, the scarves, the stars and the drifts. All the figures stand in a half circle turned towards one another, so the scene reads as a shared celebration rather than as separate characters standing side by side. The comet's tail stretches across the whole sky and ends beside the fir tree.
