Description

“Cactuses” lines up a row of cacti in colourful pots with the word Cactus beside them. Simple, cheerful graphics with nothing extra.

What the picture shows

Plants of different sizes stand in a row across the canvas: a tall three-armed cactus in the middle, round spiky balls with red and pink flowers, a prickly pear with flat pads, slim columns with yellow buds, and tiny sprouts topped with daisies. The pots are patterned — stripes, zigzags, polka dots and diamonds — in terracotta, mint, sky blue and pink. On the right the word Cactus is spelled out in large letters, each one a different colour. The beige background with its faint pink cast stays as print, so all the beadwork goes into the plants, the pots and the lettering. All the plants stand on one line, as if on a windowsill, and the different pot heights set a simple rhythm. Eighteen colours are enough to keep every pot different from its neighbour and to read the spines as pale dots against the green. The cactus flowers are red, pink and yellow, and each one is made of just a few beads.
