Description

“Cozy corner” looks out over a Mediterranean bay from a terrace planted with flowers. A warm southern town in the middle of the day, when the water is at its bluest.

What the picture shows

Houses in terracotta, ochre and pink with green shutters climb the slope on the left; boats are moored by the quay, and further out in the bay there are white yachts and a sailing boat under full sail. The surface of the water is worked in blue and turquoise beads with white tracks of reflected light. In the foreground there are stone paving, a low parapet and planters full of flowers: red geraniums, pink and lilac blooms, small white stars. The sky, the mountains and the far green headland stay as print on the canvas, while beadwork picks out the water, the roofs, the boats and the flowering foreground. The eye moves from the flowers in the foreground deep into the bay, towards the sailing boat and the mountains on the horizon. That perspective is what makes it feel as if you are standing on a terrace looking down at the water. The reflections of the yachts in the water are stitched as short white rows.
