Description

“Awe of the senses” shows two pink flamingos standing in shallow water facing each other while the sun goes down behind them. Their necks bend so that an almost perfect heart appears between the birds.

What the picture shows

The plumage is worked in pink, coral, raspberry and white beads, the beaks are black and red, the legs long and thin. The water below is turquoise with green and gold reflections, the sky above is orange with a yellow sun disc and bands of cloud. Large tropical flowers frame the birds: cream and peach orchids at the top, mottled hibiscus below, lush green leaves along the edges. Almost the entire surface is beaded — flowers, water and sky alike — which makes the picture dense and iridescent. The composition is symmetrical: the birds mirror each other, and the floral border repeats that symmetry above and below. Thirty colours give smooth transitions in the plumage, from pale pink at the neck to deep raspberry on the wings. The path of sunlight on the water is worked in golden beads.
