Description

“Spotty giraffes” shows two giraffes stretching their necks upward in a cloud of butterflies. The subject is light and childlike, almost a fairy tale, with no hint of a realistic savannah.

What the picture shows

The upper giraffe is honey-ginger with classic brown patches; the lower one is pink and lilac, its markings shifting from ochre to raspberry. Butterflies fly all around them — turquoise, blue, purple, cherry red, small and large, some settling right on the horns and muzzles. At the bottom the composition rests on a bouquet of roses and peonies in deep red, peach and cream, with a few blue blooms and green leaves. The background is white and almost empty, with faint watercolour washes; it stays as print, which makes the beaded wings look especially raised. Both necks stretch along a diagonal, so the eye travels from the bouquet at the bottom up to the butterfly at the very top. The kit uses twenty-seven colours, and most of them go into the wings. The horns and ears are left almost unbeaded, so they stay warm and matte.
