Description

“Next to mom” shows an elephant and her calf in tropical undergrowth, drawn in the style of bright Eastern ornament. The mood is warm and unhurried: the little one keeps close to its mother's trunk, and the whole picture glows turquoise and violet.

What the picture shows

Both elephants are covered in dense pattern of curls, circles and dots — blue, lilac, pink and emerald transitions turn their silhouettes into mosaic. The mother wears a wreath of small flowers on her head, pink lotuses rise on tall stems beside her, orange heliconias grow to the right, and a striped parasol and a tiny pagoda sit among the leaves. The background, a blurred turquoise and violet wash with palm silhouettes, stays as print on the canvas. Beadwork covers the animals, the flowers and the grasses, so the ornament lifts off the soft background and starts to shimmer. The mother's trunk is lowered and almost touches the calf — that gesture is exactly what the title rests on. Small white beads along the outlines of the ornament work like backlighting.
