Description

“Gondolier's song” shows a Venetian canal, a gondola against a wall, and the gondolier at his oar. This is a quiet side alley rather than a grand waterfront.

What the picture shows

The gondolier stands at the stern on the left: white shirt, dark trousers, red sash and a straw hat, his long oar lowered into the water. The gondola itself is deep blue, almost black, with a gold stripe along the side and a high curved prow; dark red seats show inside. The water is turquoise with white glints and carries the reflection of the boat. On the left a pointed Gothic doorway sits in a blue frame; on the right stand houses of cream and terracotta stone, and above them a cascade of crimson bougainvillea spills over a balcony. The arch of a stone bridge closes the view behind. Beads cover the gondola, the figure, the water and the flowers, while the walls and the arch behind stay as painting on the canvas.
