Description

“Universe” shows a giant turtle swimming through starlit space, carrying elephants on its shell, and on them rests an entire world. It is the classic fantasy image of a flat world.

What the picture shows

At the bottom of the composition swims the turtle, neck outstretched and flippers wide, worked in green, turquoise and sandy brown with a plated pattern across the shell. Several blue-green elephants stand on its back, raised trunks propping up the disc of the world. The disc itself is a snow-capped mountain with a turreted castle and small houses on its slopes, and a waterfall pours over the rim and falls away below. Around it lies a black sky of white cross-shaped stars, orange and blue nebulae to the right and left, a small yellow sun and several planets, one of them red with a ringed band. Beads cover the turtle, the elephants, the mountain and the castle, while the nebulae stay as painting on the canvas, which is what keeps the space looking deep.
