Description

“Sparks of sound” shows a violin spilling a coloured firework of butterflies, flowers and blots of paint. The metaphor is direct: music rendered as a burst of colour.

What the picture shows

The instrument lies diagonally across the left side of the canvas, scroll upwards. Its body is worked in warm red-orange with gold glints along the edges, the neck and pegs are darker, the strings fine and pale. To the right of the violin everything flies apart: blue, turquoise, crimson, yellow and violet patches, among which you can pick out butterflies with open wings, round flower heads and small musical notes. The ground is white, so every patch sounds on its own, and coloured drips run down from beneath the violin. Beads cover the violin, the butterflies and the densest clusters of colour, while the light splashes and washes stay as print on the canvas.
