Description

“Motorship” shows an old paddle steamer at its mooring in evening light. The scene is painted in broad strokes, and the lights stretch down into the water in long bands.

What the picture shows

The vessel sits almost centred, turned side-on to the viewer: two tall black funnels trailing smoke, several tiers of decks with rows of lit windows, a warm golden-yellow hull. A pale sailing boat with slender masts stands beside it on the left. The sky is laid in large patches of orange, red, turquoise and violet, worked one over another as if with a palette knife. The water below is dark, crossed by long vertical reflections in red, gold, blue, pink and lilac. Beads cover the steamer, the lights and the reflections, while the broadest strokes of sky stay as print on the canvas — so the painterly feel survives and the light itself comes out in beadwork.
