Description

“Totem” is a large portrait of an eagle owl against a pale web that recalls a dreamcatcher. The subject is restrained and warm, and it holds on a single gaze.

What the picture shows

The bird is turned three-quarters, head lifted, its dark hooked beak in profile, its yellow eye with a black pupil looking just past the viewer. The plumage is worked in ochre, russet, brown and cream: fine feathers on the brow, dark bars on the ear tufts, a pale collar under the beak and longer feathers falling to the right. On the left, a white net with uneven cells stands out against the light ground — a dreamcatcher web; on the right the background carries a fine linear pattern in browns. The palette runs to only 14 colours, so the piece looks whole and nearly monochrome, and all the interest sits in the shifts within the feathers and in that bright eye.
