Description

“Eiffel Tower” sets the Paris silhouette against bright runs of paint. The tower itself is drawn in detail while everything around it stays a free painterly gesture.

What the picture shows

The tower fills the whole height of the narrow canvas, from the wide arched base to the slim spire at the top. It is worked in warm ochre, gold and brown, with small light dots that read as evening lamps caught in the ironwork. Behind and around it, blue, turquoise, magenta and violet patches spread and run downwards in drips over the white ground, as if the paint had been poured straight onto the canvas. At the foot of the tower, strokes of colour suggest the square and its lights. Beads cover the structure itself and the densest patches of colour, while the splashes and thin drips stay as print, so the tower stands crisp and the background keeps moving.
