Description

“Moonlight Sonata” shows the silhouette of a man with an umbrella seated on a golden moon above a night sea. It is a quiet fantasy scene where almost nothing happens, and that is exactly its mood.

What the picture shows

The crescent moon lies to the left, worked in ochre and gold and covered with small stars; a dark figure in a hat sits in its curve, holding a turquoise umbrella overhead. On the right a wide pale circle glows, woven from cream and golden rosettes, and fine sparks and stars scatter upwards and outwards from it. The sky is deep night blue with a few white snowflakes. Below lies the sea: even horizontal rows of blue, ultramarine and turquoise with white glints. The palette is restrained, just 16 colours, and rests on one pairing — blue ground against warm gold — so the light in the picture reads immediately.
