Description

“Bird's town” shows a fairytale house of many storeys with a winding chequered road leading up to it. It is the kind of scene invented for the illustrations of a children's book.

What the picture shows

The house is stacked in several tiers: a steep grey tiled roof, lilac and blue walls, arched windows lit yellow, small balconies and a narrow door. The road in front is a broad ribbon in lilac-and-cream check that curves in a half circle and runs off the edge. On the kerb at the left sits a russet bird with a crest, watching the house intently. To the right a dark tree rises with round orange fruit hanging like little lanterns, and at the top left a large fan-shaped windmill opens in gold and blue. The background is warm amber-yellow with the silhouette of a tower, and it stays as print on the canvas, so the beaded walls, roof and chequered road come forward.
