Description

“Camel” is a decorative portrait built entirely from ornament and beadwork. The animal reads here as a piece of jewellery rather than a wildlife study.

What the picture shows

The camel stands in profile, head raised, looking to the left. Its body is worked in deep violet and blue-lilac, scattered with large white rosettes like stars or mandala flowers. Strings of coloured beads wind around the neck and hump: red, yellow, turquoise, green and orange discs, dots and small spirals. Long tasselled pendants hang from the muzzle downwards, and fine beaded cords stream back from the head to the right like festive harness. The background is even, pale blue with a sandy cast, and it stays as painting on the canvas — which is why all that ornamental mass never merges and every detail can be read on its own.
