Description

“Circle” shows a woman in a golden-yellow dress with a parasol in the middle of a whirling festival city. Everything around her is spun into one bright vortex, like a frame caught at carnival.

What the picture shows

At the centre stands a slim figure in a long lemon-coloured dress, its hem gathered in one hand, a blue-green parasol above her head. To the right rise the façades of an old town — ochre, terracotta and lilac walls with arches and shutters. To the left a wide striped fan opens in every colour of the rainbow, and around and below it crowd gondolas, boats, lanterns, masks and small vivid details too many to count. The background is pale and faintly blue, so all the colour gathers into a ring around the figure. Beads cover the dress, the parasol, the fan, the houses and the gondolas, while the blurred pale edges of the composition stay as print on the canvas, letting the whirl dissolve into the air.
