Description

“Brightening” is a luminous still life: a generous bouquet on a table with two horses grazing behind it in the morning haze. It holds the mood of an early summer hour, when the light is still pale.

What the picture shows

The bouquet gathers pink and lilac peonies and roses, small white and yellow blooms, green leaves and slender grasses. It stands in a dark graphite-grey footed vase with a raised pattern, solid enough to carry the whole mass of flowers. The table is white, flecked with tiny spots of colour as if petals had fallen across it. On the right the background opens into a pale field where two chestnut horses lower their heads to the grass; they remain soft painting on the canvas. Beadwork covers the flowers, the vase and the scattered accents on the table, and that is what steps forward, while the watercolour ground of blurred blue and green keeps the air around the bouquet. A palette of 29 colours allows gradual shifts inside each petal.
