Description

“Magic shine” places a water lily at the centre of a golden burst while the night sky spins around it. The subject is pure fantasy, built entirely on light spreading in circles.

What the picture shows

The heart of the composition is a blue-and-pink lotus on a slim green stem rising from the water below. A large solar ring burns around the flower: dense orange at its edge, pale yellow and almost white inside. Beyond it come broad curling strokes of blue, violet, lilac and emerald, spiralling like a windy night sky. White stars and snowflakes of different sizes are scattered across the whole field, and at the bottom the sky turns into a turquoise band of water. The beads follow the direction of the strokes, so the glow and the swirls really do turn rather than simply fill the surface; the finest white rays stay as print on the canvas.
