Description

“Koi carps” is a narrow vertical panel with an Eastern subject: gold and red fish rising through blue water among lotus flowers. The design works like a scroll, read from the bottom upwards.

What the picture shows

The water is set in waves of turquoise, cobalt and deep blue, and four large koi move between those curls — red-orange with white, and warm golden ochre. Flowers are scattered the whole height: pink and lilac lotuses with pointed petals, white and yellow water lilies, small pale blooms near the base. A band of ornament in warm golden brown closes the top like a brocade border. The palette rests on the contrast between cold blue water and the warm bodies of the fish, so the composition reads from across a room. Beads cover the carp, the flowers and the main water curls, while the finest shifts of the background stay as print on the canvas.
