Description

“Embroidered Ukraine” is a map of Ukraine filled with traditional embroidery patterns. Each region carries its own ornament, and together they form a single cloth of red, black, white and blue.

What the picture shows

The outline of the country lies in the centre of the horizontal canvas and reads clearly, with the full shape of the coastline and the Crimean peninsula in the lower right. Inside, the map is broken into patches, each with its own motif: geometric diamonds, eight-pointed stars, small crosses, floral rosettes, bands with cross strokes. The red-and-black range typical of Ukrainian embroidery dominates, but blue, turquoise, yellow and green motifs appear here and there. A golden ornament resembling domed buildings shows in the upper right. The lower part of the picture is a ripe wheat field with ears of grain, above it blue sky with light clouds, and the white words “Вишивана Україна” are stitched into that band on the left. Sky and wheat mostly stay as print, while the beads cover the ornamented map and the lettering.
