Description

“Heart's-ease” is a dense bunch of garden pansies gathered from blooms of many colours: white, blue, crimson, purple and orange. Small ladybirds crawl across the petals and leaves.

What the picture shows

The composition is horizontal and builds outward from the centre, where three large flowers open in a pink-lilac range with dark hearts and yellow specks. To their left glow a white-and-blue and a deep blue pansy, to the right white-and-violet ones with fine veining, and above them orange and yellow blooms with black markings. Thin tendrils and pointed green leaves wind between the flowers. The background is purple with pale squares that act as frames behind individual blooms. The beadwork covers the pansies, the leaves, the tendrils and the ladybirds, while the purple field with its squares stays as print on the canvas, so the bunch steps forward and looks almost three-dimensional.
